Since the Project: Mustang car has a transplanted Thunderbird 2.3 Liter Turbocharged motor in it that motor also came with the factory Ford top mounted intercooler which was fine when it was in a T-bird, but the mustang hood doesn't give it any room or airflow at all. So instead of cooling the intake charge it was probably heating it up, seeing as it basically sits right on top of the exhaust.
To eliminate this problem what was required was either to move the intercooler to the front of hte car, or provide a better way for air to pass through it, allowing it to do it's job. Since we want to take this one step at a time, and since moving it to the front will require a LOT of extra plumbing that would probably do nothing but drop boost pressure, it was decided that the way to go was a hood scoop. A suitable "easy to install" scoop was located and off we go.
This particular scoop was chosen because it strongly resembles the SVO style scoop, and according to the package it "could be made functional."
Those with weak stomachs should look away now. Here is where the first cuts were made into the hood.
Once you start to dremel your hood, there's no going back!
At some point it should probably be mentioned that this hood had damage on it already, so these cuts were not being made on a pristine piece of metal. Appearance and external details will come later with this car, the initial drive of Project Mustang is to get the car into the best mechanical condition we can make it.
As the cuts were made, the metal was bent down and out of the way, in order to create a dam to ensure that the incoming air was going exactly where we want it to go.
The hole was finished, the metal was all bent to where it was supposed to be, so the last step is affixing the scoop to the hood. Here was can see the ultra precise measuring and placement system that was employed.
And the scoop is on the car!
Will this actually channel air into the intercooler? Will the Project Mustang car perform at all? If you want to see it go down the track for the very first time, come to Street Night on July 14th and watch for yourself!
