We here at Street to Strip are proud and excited to introduce Project: Mustang, our site's first project car!  Follow along as we collect baseline information, figure out what can be improved and see how much performance we can give this American icon.

The car is a 1992 Mustang LX hatchback, originally equipped with a 2.3 liter 4 cylinder, but now sporting a 2.3 liter turbocharged powerplant from a 1988 Thunderbird.  Since this is the same engine that was also used in the SVO Mustang, we are expecting to be able to pull good power out of this little motor.

The transplant also included the Thunderbird 5 speed manual, hydraulic clutch and 8.8" rear end as well as the 16" wheels.  This is a recent transfer, so there are still some kinks to work out and lots and lots of knuckles to be bruised before it's all done.

How well will it perform the first time at the track?  How far can you push this engine and still keep it reliable?  Remember the emphasis here is on daily drivers, not trailer queens, so in the final analysis this car has to be able to go get the groceries as well as lay down some rubber on the strip.

Follow along with us and site member Lincoln as decisions are made, efforts are expended and time slips are collected.  Take a ride in Project: Mustang!

First Upgrade Completed: Plugs, wires, cap, rotor (ford motorsport parts)
And yes it runs better! Also replaced the Idle Air Control Valve which has not completly fixed a random idle problem - TPS will be tested to help find the Gremlin.

Disaster averted: On a rainy day about 2 weeks ago, I drove through some standing water.... it then stumbled at 2500rpm and I thought I was totally screwed. After avoiding thinking about it for awhile hoping it would go away I started pulling the cold air intake off - that where the water stated running out, it also ran out of the intercooler and could be seen sitting in the turbo housing. WetVac to the rescue! After a drying out period for the car (not me, i was nervously sipping JB) I bolted it back together and fired it up, and just in time for the cruise in at steak n shake.
