This past Saturday at the Midnight Drags, the top of my head opened up, an etherial light poured into my skull, and a fundamental epiphany made itself known to me:

Underdrive pulleys are marketed as an easy 10 horsepower bolt on that benefits any car that any shade tree mechanic can install in an afternoon. But do they work? And how do they work? And what are the disadvantages, if any? This is a very common performance part that is commonly seen in the drag racing pits, but is it just a bragging rights part or does it actually produce?

Each year on the Chinese calendar is assigned to a particular animal, for example this year (2008) is the year of the Rat. Why the rat? Only they know. I have no idea what animal the year 2010 is supposed to be, but I don't even need to go look it up because the stars are all aligned, the tea leaves are arranged and the bones have been rolled. An event that seems to only happen once every 40 years is coming to pass: 2010 is going to be the year of the car.

There are a number of things that a person can do to their car in order to modify the performance of that car. To some people performance might mean better gas mileage. To some it might mean better towing capacity. To most of us on this site it means "Get me to that 1/4 mile mark as fast as possible" so we are going to explore what effects gear changes have on how a car performs (by our definition) along with the help of the guys over at Midwest Car Care.
