The hypertech chip has a generic program that advances your timing with a new timing table, in some cases helps your transmission by increasing the line pressure and some other small tweaks. It is probably worth 40 bucks.
I wouldn't run this chip if you are running ANY power adders at all, and understand that you will probably need to run better fuel than 87 octane or you'll get pinging.
I don't know how generic the ECUs are for GM products. I know on Fords there are often a variety of them for any given make of car, and that most of the SCT chips need to know the "catch code" for your particular ECU. I have no idea if GM is smarter than that or not, I hope they are and figured out that 10 different ECus for one make of car is a stupid idea.
I would recommend while installing this that you yank off your battery cable, and also you probably won't see the full effect of it until the system "learns" your new timing, etc, probably after 100 starts or so.
If you are running ANY POWER ADDERS AT ALL this product should probably not be installed, or it will cause cylinder detonation.

The reason that I was adamant about the power adders thing is because that style of chip usually increases your timing by 4-5 degrees while at full throttle, which is fine for a totally stock motor but is precisely what you do not want happening if you are running any sort of power adder. You'll spark early while the piston is still coming up and then kaboom, no more motor.
On a totally stock motor you should see probably 20 horses or so extra power at full throttle. That's worth 40 bucks certainly.
